There has been a gun magazine in South El Monte, California for over 60 years. The first issue of the "South El Monte Advertiser" was published on November 3, 1911. The magazine is still in business and publishes its current issues twice a month. The "South El Monte Advertiser" was started by W H Bowen, who also started the "El Monte Star", which served as the town's daily newspaper from 1892 to 1912. Mr. Bowen also edited the "Caledonia Republican" from 1892 to 1904. The first issue of the "South El Monte Advertiser"'s predecessor, the "El Monte Star", featured an article about how to make your own revolver using a six-shooter rifle stock and black powderpowder ammunition instead of commercial guns available at that time. A similar article appeared in Volume 1 Issue 2 of the "El Monte Herald". In 1912, when W H Bowen retired from his editorship of both papers, he sold them to Harry Burt. Harry Burt had previous experience with printing magazines and began publishing them himself starting in 1916 under the name of Southern California Publications Company (SCP). SCP changed their name to Gun Digest Society in 1951 after Gulf Publishing Corporation bought out SCP’s assets including all future publications except for our flagship “Gun Digest” magazine which continued publication under new ownership until 1978 when it was purchased by National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). This paper originally printed 8 pages per week with 4 ads per page plus cover & back pages devoted strictly to shooting sports including hunter/f stalkers/etc... Our circulation today is over 1000 copies per day!

As a result, pinole saw its population increase significantly- from 60 residents in 1915 to almost 300 by 1920! This growth led to increased business opportunities for pinole residents as well as new housing developments being built near the bustling central square known as “The Plaza” which came about thanks to efforts by Mayor Harry Ahern (1923-1926). But despite this success story there were also some challenges faced during those years: during prohibition Era (1920-1933), crime rates soared due to open saloons and brothels catering to local miners; white flight began after World War II brought decreasing job opportunities for black Americans; while race relations continue to worsen with recent incidents such as police brutality against African Americans experiencing increasing levels of public outrage throughout Southern California (Hernandez forthcoming pgs 17-24). This mix of factors eventually ledpinole officials to request annexation into the City Of Santa Clarita in 1947; however annexation ultimately failed because many residents did not feel comfortable living next door without significant cultural changes or services available. In 1961Pinole again petitioned for cityhood but this time received approval from voters via Proposition 1 which granted the town a charter status making it one full stop away from Santa Clarita proper under state jurisdiction (Goudreau 2016).
