It is the second most populous city in San Bernardino County after Riverside. South El Monte is located on the south side of Interstate 10 and is bordered by east-central San Bernardino County to the north and west and south by Hereford Hills to the east. The community of South El Monte began as a small post office called "Elmonte" on April 15, 1894. In 1912, it became an incorporated town when it was annexed by Riverside. South El Monte, California is a town located in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 66,628 at the 2010 census. It is part of the South El Monte–Montebello-Norwalk metropolitan area. The original name for the community was "El Monte" meaning "top of the mountain." On July 20, 1881, a group of farmers led by Captain Samuel Morse planted a flag on Mount Washington to commemorate their discovery of land that would become South El Monte. On December 15, 1912 an act was passed by the state legislature designating South El Monte as part of the city of Los Angeles. In 1924 South El Montanans ratified an ordinance granting voting rights to African Americans and making it one of only two towns in California without such rights. On February 3, 1930 a fire destroyed most of downtown South El Monte leaving only a small section still standing today known as The Alley. In 1965 south el monte annexed to montebello and since then it has always been one big merger or annexation with no separation between communities
The town of South El Monte, California was founded by the Mexican Americans in 1847. The town was named after José María Borda, a Spanish immigrant who founded the village of San Miguel de Allende in 1821. The area that would become South El Monte was first part of Rancho Pasco, which was owned by the Peralta family. In 1848, the rancho was sold to José Joaquín Murrieta and Manuel Nieto. The Murrieta family soon developed a dairy farm north of town and employed numerous Mexicans as laborers. In 1861, following the American Civil War, South El Monte became part of Mexico when it gained independence from Spain. After Mexican independence came about, many Anglo-Americans moved into the area and began to develop farms and businesses. Lt Col James Haggard established Camp Haggard in 1865 on land that now forms the core of South El Monte. In 1870 Antonio Vallejo purchased 5 acres within what is now downtown South El Monte from Captain Isaac Parker for $500 dollars. Vallejo built his home there called Villa de la Union which still stands today. In 1885 Santiago Carrillo bought 8 acres within what is now downtown South Elmonte from Captain Isaac Parker for $2 000 dollars; Carrillo built his home there called La Casa Blanca which still stands today. From here he began developing a grocery store/cartel known as “El Comercio” which operated until 1912 when it burned down due to arson attempts by rival gangs belonging to both Latino and Anglo gangs (the so-called “Mexican Gang Wars”). The early 20th century saw an increase in immigration to Southern California becauseof increased jobs available in World War I and II related industries such as munitions manufacturing and airplane production; this migration also resulted in several African American entrepreneurs starting small businesses along with many Latinos coming overland seeking work opportunities especially at defense plants across America during this time period (i.e., Operation Wetlands). South ElMonte experienced its own significant growth during this time period with many families moving into the area including Norma Astudillo who started her business doing laundry services out her house back then known as La Laundrera until she converted her property into an apartment complex that still stands today – one of only a handful remaining examples left throughout Southern California specifically dating back to pre-war days where most were replaced or destroyed by more recent arrivals mainly those brought over through Ellis Island post-war resettlement efforts (1946–1951) however some notable exceptions exist like Hotel Don Carlos located on Beale Street between 3rd Avenue & Broadway Streets – currently under restoration following years worth Architectural Preservation League funds
