South El Monte, California is a small town in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 20,827 at the 2010 census. It is located in the southeast corner of Los Angeles County on the border of Kern and San Bernardino counties. The town was first inhabited by the Tongva people and their allies who fought against Spanish settlers in what is now southern Orange County. In 1821, Mexican President Agustín de la Huerta ordered Mexico's new military governor to relocate all Native American people living west of Guadalupe Mountains except for those living on Rancho Santa Anita east of San Gabriel River. In 1825, Juan Bautista Alvarado discovered gold in what is now South El Monte and announced his discovery to the world at a public meeting near today's intersection of State Route 666 and US 95 (now known as US 101). Alvarado named his new goldfield after himself – Santa Monica Gold Fields. The early residents were mainly naturalists who collected plants and animals for scientific observation; however, some men also mined coal and silver here during this period. By 1870, over 60% of South Elmonte citizens were Anglo-Saxon Protestants from Southern California's Central Valley regions such as Kern, Riverside, Madera and Inyo Counties; while Latinos made up just 10% of the population according to 1990 census figures. On July 15th 1906 two fires swept through South El Monte bringing about $1 million in damage including most valuable agricultural land that became part of Bel Air Gardens subdivision later known as North Hollywood Hills today’s Hollywood Park neighborhood northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The townsite had been founded by John Cavanaugh who arrived with a group led by Captain James Wolkowsky on November 9th 1887 from Bellaire Township northeast of Pasadena City Limits after purchasing 1/2 mile (3 km) wide strip between Sierra Madre Boulevard (now SR 91) southwesterly past present day Kingman Road eastward to Mt Vernon Avenue northwesterly alongpresent day Glendale Boulevard southwesterly then easterly along present day Highland Avenue northwesterly to its confluence with Kingsbury Avenue northwestof downtownLos Angeles

The city was founded on October 12, 1887 by John C. Fremont as a small community known as Poston Heights. The first white person to live in South El Monte was Mrs. J.G. Goodspeed who arrived in 1887 from Illinois with her family. In 1914, Harry Chandler opened Chandler's Cafe which became one of Southern California's most popular restaurants and nightlife destinations until its closure in 1984. During prohibition South ElMonte had a thriving bootlegging activity that attracted many celebrities such as Al Capone and Meyer Lansky to its "dark side". In 1994, Mayor Rudy Giuliani announced his plans for redevelopment of downtown South ElMonte which would include the construction of a new city hall, library, recreation center and other public services including an arena for the local team called the Lakers (now owned by Donald Trump) and a new high school campus called America West High School which would house both men’s and women’s teams from various sports leagues including NCAA Division I football programs as well as basketball teams from nearby Simi Valley HS. However this plan met with stiff opposition from residents who felt their neighborhoods were being targeted for replacement without any proper planning or consideration for their unique character traits such as old-fashioned architecture, historical significance or cultural attractions unique to their community. Unexpectedly enough however after more than two decades of delay following Mayor Giuliani’s original announcement much progress was made during his successor Mayor Eric Garcetti’s term culminating with groundbreaking on January 25th 2019 for what will become one of LA’s newest neighbourhoods - North Hollywood - anchored around two key plazas – Denman Plaza & Vinegar Hill – offering quality amenities that are critical to millennials living near downtown: bike lanes/parking spaces surrounding each plaza provides ample space& lackOf traffic congestion has resultedin increased property values& Create brand new retail opportunities along Denman Plaza
