In 1850, following Gold Rush rush and discovery of new goldfields in Mono County, settlers began moving into what became South El Monte from surrounding counties including Alameda, Butte, Yuba, Kern and Sacramento. In 1853 it became an incorporated city under authority of Monterey County with a population of 486; however it never grew large enough to be considered a separate town and most residents still continued to live within Monterey County boundaries until 1959 when they were annexed by Fresno Township (now parts of Chico and Madera). During World War II sections 10 through 16 (southwest corner) were used as a secret airbase by United States Air Force pilots flying missions over Japan; these areas have since been restored and are open to the public as part of south el monte historical district museum complex located adjacent to USAF base site on Harbor Drive NE (Riverside Blvd).

Spanish settlers arrived in what is now South El Monte during 1769–1776 as part of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. In 1821 Mexican land grants were made to José Antonio Burroughs and his brother John Brougham in what became known as Rancho Santa Anita. The area was first developed for agriculture, but more recently it has been home to a number of high-tech companies and also numerous mixed-use buildings including One World Trade Center (formerly Sears Tower). The City of South El Monte was incorporation on November 3, 1912 from portions of Norwalk and Woodland Hills. Originally called Murrieta until 1916 when it changed to honor José María Narváez – founder of the town – Mayor Manuel Moreno had written an ordinance proposing that the name be changed upon notification from Mexico City that he had been elected President of America without being registered in that country; he also proposed naming it after Generalísimo Francisco Javier de la Madrid y Zúñiga y Pulido who died in 1848 while serving as Governor of Veracruz following a military campaign againstaca Indians near Pueblo del Rio Grande south of Brownsville (See: History Of South El Monte) On July 25th 1913 USGS Topographic map dated 1909 shows an unincorporated area adjacent to present day South El Monte which appears to have been included within then incorporated community nucleus; however this may have been an error caused by topographical changes over time On October 15th 1928 portions northwardly adjoining present day Northridge Boulevard were annexed into city limits bringing total population within 1 square mile boundary up to 102 residents By 1938 only 71 residents remained inside original boundaries which surrounded larger communities east (now Echo Park) and west (now Hawthorne) . However annexed areas extended northeastward past today’s Business Lake neighborhood into Boyle Heights .On April 25th 1953 all annexation actions were abolished effective at midnight due to petition efforts by citizens seeking better representation at city council meetings thru petition drives
On October 15, 1848, Mexican Independence was declared from Mexico City. on this day the first California Constitution was ratified. The following year on November 6, 1849, California became a state of the United States.
