South El Monte, California is a small city in Los Angeles County, California. It is located in the northwestern corner of the county, opposite downtown Los Angeles. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. South El Monte is one of 11 towns and cities within the city of Los Angeles proper. The town was first settled by Mexicans in 1847 as part of Rancho Santa Anita de los Cahuenganos Mexican land grant. In 1868, it became part of what is now Angelino Heights and then was annexed by Los Angeles County in 1910. On December 5, 1916 South El Monte became an incorporated town with a population of 1,752 people under the name "South El Monte". The name change reflects its geographical location – southElMonte means "the end" or "south side" – as well as its history as a primarily agricultural community until the early 20th century when manufacturing began to grow there.
