South El Monte's history goes back to 1847 when it was named for José María Cámpora y Valdés, one of Mexico's three original presidents. The name "South El Monte" was chosen because of its location on an old Rancho Santa Anita grant from Mexican President Manuel Nieto de la Torre to José Maria Cámpora y Valdés. In 1912, California statehood passed through a statewide referendum and South El Monte became part of the new state of California. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. South El Monte has a long history as one of the most diverse and vibrant cities in Southern California. The city was founded in 1887 by Mexican Americans and Italian Americans as a small town called Villa Park. The name change to South El Monte after World War II when it became an American military base during the Cold War era because it was home to many American servicemen who were stationed there. After years of growth and development, South El Monte reached its present size and status as one of Southern California's most vibrant cities in 2006 when it annexed portions of neighboring Fullerton and Arcadia Counties. The community that would become South El Monte first sprang up on what are now rural parts of today’s San Bernardino County. In 1887, José Antonio Camacho leased land from Rancho Cucamonga for $5 per acre ($60 per kilometer). This initial investment was followed by others throughout the early days until enough people had taken up space to form what we know today as Villa Park Neighborhood Association (VPNA). By 1907, VPNA had formed a committee to purchase property eastward from present-day Interstate 15 for future development into what would become known as “the City” or “South El Monte” according to some sources[1]. Other early pioneers include Manuel Avilés (1863-1939), who bought 1/2 mile east of current day Interstate 15 south from Pico Boulevard at Redondo Beach Boulevard; Harry Bendixen (1875-1955), president & founder & patriarchof Bendixen Brewing Company; Mabel Batchelor(1874-1967), wife & business partnerof George Waring; Mrs. Arthur Sanger (1878-1964), widowof Cyrus Sanger; John Hoehnlein(1868-1945); Adolphus Busch(1862-1927)[2]; etc., each contributing their own individual piece to this developing cityscape that still standstoday more than 125 years later! VPNA purchased additional parcels eastward from I15 until they reached what is now Redondo Beach Boulevard where they intersected with Pico Boulevard which served as their border withFullerton then ArcadiaCounty until annexation by SouthElMonte on November 17th 2006[3]. At this point all hell broke loose! Social unrest ensued due to issues such as lack of representation within city hall (& subsequent attempts at reform) while fullscale rioting took place on December 6th [4] resulting in over 20 injuries including 3 fatalities! The violence wasn't confined just to Downtown however, much like it is today with reports coming in daily about high crime rates around Dolores Heights and other neighborhoods located adjacenttoPico Blvd./Redondo Beach Blvd./Eastonso Mesa Drive/Garden Grove Ave./Mountain View Ave./Mission Viejo Dr./etc…. And yet another reason why SouthElMonte has been able to maintain such high levels Of Stability despite these challenges? In spiteoftheir struggles civic spirit prevails throughunity& cooperation among citizens working together towards common goals….. One can only imagine how different things might have been if not for Vincent Pershing square footage measuring policy enacted back during WWII which led toreputationofgovernment headquarterinLos AngelesfromVillaParkallthewaytowardWestminster
