The city has been nicknamed "The City of Angels" because of this reputation. A small community formed around Mission San Gabriel Arcangel in 1827 became known as South El Monte when white settlers established a homestead there in 1858. In 1888, the town was renamed for General John Broughton during his visit to Southern California to help promote annexation by Los Angeles County. At that time, the area now including South El Monte made up less than one-tenth of what it would become by 1920 due to large influxes of Mexican American residents from eastern Arizona and northern Mexico who had converted to Christianity en route to becoming rancho owners in central southern California. In 1941, after World War II ended and America entered into a new era with an increased bomber output following Japan's bombing raids against Pearl Harbor, local leaders decided that South El Monte should be designated as an airfield for use by military planes traveling between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and nearby Palmdale Air Force Base (now Edwards Air Force Base). Work on building an airport began in earnest in 1945 and finished three years later; however, it wasn't until 1949 that landing strips were built out at present-day Northridge Boulevard/Ontario Avenue Northeast corner where both northbound runways intersect today (and southbound runway remains undeveloped). During post-war growth period which followed World War II boom times elsewhere in southern California such as Riverside/San Bernardino County), much land was annexed into SouthElMonte making it one of fastest growing cities ever! This annexation also happened during employment boom years caused by numerous companies establishing themselves here such as Lockheed Martin Aircraft Company which moved their plant from Burbank near Long Beach back east across Ontario Avenue northeast towards today’s intersection with Northridge Boulevard/Ontario Avenue Northeast corner then annexed some more parcels creating today’s definite boundaries for what is now called “SouthElMontae” city limits……….. Today much still remains unincorporated but many people live here including recent families moving here from other parts ofLosAngeles county or Orange county since prices have gotten so good hereabouts! All signs point to continued rapid growth right through downtown areas currently dominated by shoppingcenter developments just off Redondo Ave NE & Yorba Linda Blvd

The history of South El Monte, California is a rich and varied one. The area was first populated by the Mono people, who lived in the nearby mountains until around AD 1000. In 1848, Mexico acquired United States territory through the Mexican-American War, and as part of this boundary line, southernmost California became part of Mexico. The region was quickly populate with Mexicans and other Hispanics, and although some English speakers also arrived during this time frame, most of these immigrants were Anglo (non-Hispanic) settlers from Northern America. In 1851, when California became a state under the Constitution of United States of America, many Anglo settlers left for fear that they would become Minority status within their new homeland. This fear turned out to be unfounded; however many Southern Californians did feel disenfranchised after becoming subjects to the jurisdiction of Los Angeles County. In 1857–58Congressional representatives created San Bernardino County out eastern portions of San Diego County which border Imperial Valley in order to provide more contiguous land for settlement by American citizens instead of just those from Northern California who had already started moving into what is now South El Monte when California became a state. The town site chosen for South El Monte was on census block 11th street east between Sierra Nevada Boulevard and Interstate 5 in what is today’s downtown district. On July 1st 1870 USGS map it displays as an unincorporated community name “South El Monte” with post office opened on October 12th 1870 pursuant to act 3271 entitled “An Act For Establishing Post Offices And For Other Purposes” by Governor George Hearne with Samuel Hordern appointed as first postmaster
In 1847, Mexican landowner José Antonio Pico set out from San Bernardino on a Trek to find new land in California. He named the area South El Monte after his home village of Monterey. The town slowly grew up around it and by 1892, it had a population of about 100 people. South El Monte was annexed into Los Angeles County in 1912 and has continuously grown since then. It is now one of the most populous areas in Los Angeles County and is home to many large businesses and residences.
