By 1907, there were over sixty businesses operating in South El Monte and over two hundred citizens living there full-time. As new industries sprung up throughout Southern California during World War II including shipyards, aircraft production plants and military barracks, much smaller towns like South El Monte found themselves struggling to keep up with changes brought about by war effort activity. This led to a gradual loss of population through natural attrition as people moved away or died during peacetime times while those who remained tried to make do with less resources than when they first arrived. By 1960, just 15 percent of SouthElMonte's original population still lived there full-time; most had left for other parts of LA County or for San Diego which had opened up as an agricultural center following World War II. When Watts riots rocked Los Angeles in 1965–1966%, many young people from south el monte poured into downtownLA looking for action and soon enough such riots became commonplace occurrences across Los Angeles county due largely to lackadaisical policing by LAPD officers within their jurisdiction - something that has come under fire ever since (see Rodney King case). However heroic moments such as these often overshadow systemic issues at play such as racism and institutionalized poverty which continue to dog LA today even 25 years later given recent efforts by Mayor Eric Garcetti to address some key issues faced by his city (e e., gentrification & crime).
