In the early 1800s, shooters in Sonoma County began using eye protection to protect their eyes from the shotgun pellets and other projectiles they were firing at game. By 1876, a bill was passed that made it illegal for anyone under the age of twenty-one to purchase or use any kind of shooting eyewear without first getting a doctor’s prescription. This law discouraged young adults from engaging in outdoor activities and led to increased fatalities among rifle shooters. In 1916, Sonoma County commenced an experiment with safety goggles known as “Sono Goggles.” The goggles were designed to reduce the risk of eye injuries caused by firearms exercised in close quarters. The goggles were effective and remained in use until 1954. In that year,Sonoma County became one of the first jurisdictions in California to require all handgun buyers to get a license plate number (LPN) when they completed their application for a license to carry a handgun. Today, Sonoma County has one of the most comprehensive gun safety programs in Northern California. Our legislators have been working tirelessly over many years to make sure all citizens are aware of our laws and are taking steps towards keeping our community safe from harm.

In addition to its wine production, Sonoma County is also known for its cheese industry (the most important producer here being Boursin cheese) as well as apple orchards, cranberry orchards, grapevines, fig trees and many other agricultural products

Sonoma is a small town in Sonoma County, California. The population was 7,818 at the 2010 census. At its peak in 1849, it had a population of 20,000 people. The town was platted in 1848 by Jedediah Smith and named for his father-in-law, Manuel Acosta. It became an agricultural center with wine production becoming a major industry by the early 1800s. The first post office opened in Sonoma on July 6, 1848. In 1853, the Santa Rosa Railroad arrived and changed the economy of Sonoma County forever; it now produced only goods traffic. By 1870, wine production had become so important that taxes were raised to support it and two churches were built to accommodate the growing industry: one near present day downtown and another near Mission Creek. Beginning around World War II,Sonoma's growth slowed as immigrants replaced natives in many jobs within the community and outside of it; however there have been recent efforts to revive economic development throughout the region through various means such as art galleries and vineyards being founded hereabouts again.
The first Europeans to visit Sonoma were the Spanish in 1602. The area was explored by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542 and then mapped by Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. The Presidio of San Francisco was founded on December 3, 1821 by Lieutenant Colonel José Joaquín Balboa y Valdés. In 1846, the United States acquired California from Mexico under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On July 7, 1850, California became a U.S. state with a population of 26,000 people when it was divided between Santa Clara and Alameda Counties.
