The first European settler in what is now Sonoma County was Captain George Bass who landed on October 12, 1777 at Yerba Buena Island and built a small cabin. This led to the development of this area as an agricultural center with many mills and farms operated by Anglo-Saxon Protestants. By 1870, there were over 100 settlements in Sonoma County including Tomales (now Marin), Novato (now Contra Costa), Gilroy (now Alameda), Windsor (now San Francisco) and Sausalito. As more Anglo-Saxon Protestants came to live here they began to form their own churches and schools which helped contribute to early American culture hereabouts. The first post office established in Sonoma County was at Petaluma on November 6, 1846 and it served until May 1st of 1861 when it moved to Novato after that time it served various other locations before finally moving back into Petaluma on January 1st 1912 This was followed by Cloverdale on February 14th 1912 and then Berryessa on July 29th 1913 before finally moves into its current location of Santa Rosa on April 15th 1914
On October 30, 1853, the first post office in Sonoma County was opened at Ukiah. The name of the town changed several times before settling on Ukiah in 1881. In 1916, it became a city and remains so today.
