Gun target shooting is a centuries-old sport in Sonoma County. The first reported use of firearms to shoot targets atlatls was in 1792 by the military during the Mexican-American War. Sonsoma Valley’s gun range, located on Menlo Park Boulevard, has been hosting target shoots since 1896. The American Rifle Association (ARA) was founded in 1871 and has been the driving force behind increased gun availability and safety in America. ARA members are responsible for maintaining over 1 million acres of rifle ranges across the country, including Sonoma County. In 1968, Proposition 13 passed in California ballots supporting handgun control measures that made it unenforceable withinSonoma County. Gun ranges were allowed to reopen but only with written consent from local governments prior to opening. This policy effectively stopped pistol target shooting activity within Sonoma County and continues today outside of City limits only for shotgun hunting/recreation purposes. Sonoma is a small town located in the Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The appellation "Sonoma" means "place of fruit trees." The first Europeans to visit what is now Sonoma County were fur traders and missionaries who penetrated into this area in 1777. They called the place Santa Rosa because they saw a big grape tree there. The name stuck and today's Sonoma Valley has been named for Santa Rosa as well. The earliest human habitations in what is now Sonoma County date back to 10,000 BC whendomesticates such as mammoths and cave bears lived here with their herds of animals and children. Over time these people forgot how to cultivate crops so their food supply dwindled and eventually they left or were pushed out by more recent arrivals including Polynesians, Mongolians, Chumash Indians, Native Americans and European settlers from various parts of North America during the 18th century-19th century period known as Gold Rush era. However some early pioneers did succeed in starting some vineyards which became integral to local wine production until it was replaced by modern irrigation systems in the late 19th century. In 1846 Arapaho Chief Manuel Nieto leased land near Yolei Creek from James Wolkowitz for $1 per acre (the first real estate transaction in Marin County). He named his tract Rancho Nuevo after Rancho Viejo which he had visited north of Mexico City on his way home from visiting his wife’s family on December 12, 1840 while he was governor of New Mexico Territory (later Arizona Territory). At that time ranchos were granted only to Mexican citizens who owned enough land subject to tribute or tributes paid annually by everyone living within its boundaries- not just Cochisey Mexicans like himself since Wolkowitz had no title thereto! Thus even though his grant ran along present day Highway 101 it never reached its current location! Aaaron Smith located about 8 miles east northeast of Russian Flat onrabid soil intersecting Yolei Creek on October 25th 1849 patented three acres southeast corner lot number 9556 adjoining Yolei Creek said patent being entitled “Rancho Nuevo vista de la majestad” meaning “New View Of The Majesty”; lots numbered 9554-9559 having been patented between Octobre 25th 1849 - Febrero 4 th 1850 inclusive.) This spot would later become known as Russian Flat where he built an adobe house hosting meetings of both public and private individuals important in promoting ranchero cultivation thereby becoming one of first ranchers/ Developers instrumental in creating today’s Town plaza just south Ferry Road exit off I-580 corridor

Sonoma is a small town located in Sonoma County, California. The name comes from the Spanish word "sonomá" meaning "place where they sing." It was founded by early European settlers in 1849. The Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, now the oldest Protestant church in Sonoma County and one of the oldest churches in California, was built there in 1852. The town's first post office opened on May 25, 1850. The late 1800s saw a large influx of Italian immigrants to Sonoma County as part of the larger wave of European immigration that swept America during that decade. In 1898, Sonoma's first Catholic church was built at what is now Fourth Street and Adobe Road. In 1916, Sonoma became an incorporated city; it had been annexed by Guerneville two years earlier. Today,Sonoma is a vibrant community with an active cultural life and rich history that has preserved its unique character since its earliest days. Some of the most memorable moments in town's history include: being birthplace to then-U2 frontman Bono (born 1983), when President Reagan made his inaugural address from within sonomasphere Stadium (now known as Petaluma Civic Center), when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon (July 20, 1969), and becoming home to one of Northern California's first farmers markets when it opened its doors on May 1st, 2009
