In 1849, another American named George Aiken bought parts of Rancho Santa Clara from Pemberton and started developing it into a small town known as Aikenville which he renamed Sonoma after himself (the name has since been retired). Over time other families moved into these days-friendly villages dotting today's downtowns of Petaluma, Rohnert Park and Saratoga Springs: Driscoll (founded 1886), Harriman (1892), Butterfield (1904), Winters (1906), Murdoch (1908) and many more. By 1930 there were more than 1,000 residents living in Sonoma County - making it one of the most populous counties in California! At this time downtown areas such as Petaluma Junction and Rohnert Park had become vibrant commercial centers with numerous businesses clustered together along State Street corridor between Petaluma Riverbank and Interstate 805 junction just outside of town limits where Highway 5 intersected I-805 creating what is now known as "The Trippy Triangle". Unfortunately during World War II much of this commerce was destroyed or relocated to larger cities due to our bitter war against Nazi Germany but some amazing examples still remain such as The Adobe Theater located at 12th Avenue & International Boulevard within walking distance of downtown Petalula!
