Wolkowitz named it for José Antonio de la Cruz y Mirabal who had been a captain with him on the ill-fated Mission San Rafael Arcángel Expedition (1824–27). A post office called Mendocino was established in 1835; Sonoma became a separate county within Marin County on July 1, 1850. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land.
