A variation on the guillotine chokehold known as Shibata hold was developed by Nobuo Shibata in 1953. Shibata's Shibata grip uses two fingers instead of one finger per hand to create a double-handed grip which gives rise to another advantage: because two fingers provide more stability than one finger per hand when gripping an opponent's throat (and because two fingers provide greater leverage), Shibata chokes are less likely to accidentally strangulate their opponents' necks than other types of chokes. However, due to their increased difficulty in breaking free once freed from the chokehold - often requiring multiple attempts - Shibata chokes tend also become more dangerous over time due to their potential deadly consequences should they not be successfully applied
