The first firearms were built in Sonoma County in 1855. The name of the company that manufactured these firearms is unknown, but it is thought to have been called “Brown and Wesson.” In 1860, the California state legislature passed a law making all handguns a felony. This law caused many gunmakers to move their manufacturing operations out of California, and into other states. Brown & Wesson continued to make firearms in Sonoma County until 1861 when they moved their entire production operation outside of the state for fear of being prosecuted.

Sonoma County was organized on February 17, 1855 from parts of Marin and Napa counties. The area now includes most of the Sonoma Peninsula and extends into northeastern San Francisco Bay. The climate in Sonoma County is warm to hot but temperate with significant annual rainfall that ranges in totals from around 1,600 to 2,400 inches (40-100 cm). Gun barrels are one of the oldest parts of firearms, and they have a long and varied history. Some gun barrel manufacturers date their Barrels back to before the 1700’s! The first guns were made with smoothbore barrels which could only be used by big men. Firearms became more popular in the 1800’s when guns began being produced for small-time shooters, such as farmers and hunters. By the turn of the century, rifles had become common, so large-caliber barrels were necessary for firing them. In 1907, an American rifle manufacturer named Butler developed a type of large caliber barrel called a “Stonington Bullet.” This barrel was designed to fire rounds that weighed over 100 grains (9 ounces) each. These new guns required larger calibers because they were now being used by professional soldiers in wars all over the world. In 1911, another American rifle manufacturer named Winchester released a new type of large caliber barrel called an “ Improved Stonington Bullet.” This barrel was designed to fire rounds that weighed less than 50 grains (2 ounces). Other rifle manufacturers soon followed suit with their own versions of this bullet design. As firearms became more sophisticated and powerful, it was necessary for gunmakers to create even Greater calibers for their products! By 1920, there were still no standard sizes for these larger calibers! Gunmakers had to make do with whatever smaller calibers they could find available at the time! Another interesting development occurred during World War II whengun barrels started becoming longer in order to accommodate heavier rounds that could be fired effectively at high altitudes (above 5000 meters).

Gun barrels have a long and varied history. The first type of gun barrel was the flintlock. These were made from wood or other materials that were heated with an iron or other metal rod before being used to fire a projectile. Flintlocks were replaced by percussion guns in the mid-19th century, but they continued to be used into the late 19th century. In 1857, Robert Stephenson submitted a design for a new type of gun barrel, which he called the lever action rifle. This consisted of a tube, known as the breech block, that wasmounted on top of an armature carried by an individual arm. The breech block could be operated by using either hand while the weapon was held in one hand; this made it much easier and faster to fire than earlier types of firearms. The first successful use ofgun barrels in warfare occurred during the American Civil War (1861-1865). General Ulysses S. Grant’s Union army successfully utilized gun barrels that had been designed by Major John Brownell and developed at West Point under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. Gun barrels played an important role in these hostilities, and they proved to be very effective against Confederate forces.

The first written reference to Sonoma County is from an anonymous deed dated January 12, 1861, which awarded land to three brothers - George Washington Goodwin, Augustus DeBurgh and John Goodwin - for the purpose of erecting a schoolhouse and other public buildings in what would become known as the "Goodwin Ranch". This location served as the nucleus around which future community development took place. In 1876, construction began on what would become one of California's most famous hillside villages - Santa Rosa - within sight of San Francisco Bay. Soon after this pioneer community became established there were other similar settlements sprung up throughout Northern California including Danville (1881), Emeryville (1883), Antioch (1907), Yountville (1910) and Vacaville (1913). With rapid growth came social changes however. In 1887 resulted in the passage of Proposition 8 which banned same-sex marriage statewide in California; this event has been generally viewed as sparking mass polygamy among Californians leading to declining birthrates over ensuing decades. As a result many married women left their husbands' homes to find new opportunities elsewhere while still others chose not to have any children at all due to various social taboos against interracial marriage at that time. “The Coming American Victorians” by Lisa Mason Ziegler offers an excellent overview bothof early 20th century racial composition in Northern California – specificallySonoma County–and how this influenced local politics during this period: “Many white people had migrated eastward following the Gold Rush; they brought with them their ranching skills and their expectations about how things ought to be done… [T]he Chinese had also followed these men into gold country but they soon realized that they wouldn't get rich quick jumping out into open water like prospectors did…. so instead they set up businesses doing goods that hadn't been invented yet such as laundry service and dry goods….. both Japanese Americans and Mexican Americans also started businesses because no one else wanted to do them…….. White people who moved west didn't just change their behavior; they changed everything” (Mason Ziegler 353). With more whites moving into southern Sonoma Counties – much like earlier waves flowing into Sacramento – African American residents found themselves isolated from mainstream society for sustained periods during this era(Lamont 4). ).
