The history of Sonoma begins with Native American groups who lived near what is now Sonoma County for thousands of years. The first European settlement in present-day Sonoma County occurred in 1777 when Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded by Father Jose Maria De Jesus y Mendoza. One hundred years later another mission was established at Petaluma which served as a training ground for priests from Santa Clara Mission until 1821 when it moved to Monterey Bay. From 1825 until 1849 these missions were combined into one structure known as Mother Lode Mission under the leadership of Father George Bancroft. After Mexican independence through the Mexican Cession in 1848 this mission became part of Rancho Rinconada which belonged to José Joaquín Seguin y Valdivia who sold it to Rafael Ortega y Gasset in 1865. In 1868 Ortega y Gasset divided it among his two sons Carlos Mendoza and Manuel Noriega who sold it to James Wickersham Pemberton in 1880). The last sale took place on April 15th 1912 when Pemberton bought title to land east of Highway 101 from John Averill Grant for $2 million dollars (). Today only 6% remains within Rancho Rinconada boundaries while 98% has been developed commercially or residences have been built there since then (). Sonoma Valley was first settled by Native Americans about 12 miles (19 km) south east from where modern day Petaluma now sits . There are various accounts about how this area got its name including “Tulip Town” because some people thought they saw tulips growing thereabouts . Other sources say that someone named Antonio Passero claimed he discovered wines being grown hereabouts during a journey through Napa Valley back in 1776 So naming an area after something you found might be considered poetic license by today’s standards but at the time it would have been seen as pretty cool! The region that makes up Sonoma was originally inhabited by the Ohlone people and was first settled by Missionaries in 1776. In 1849, Sonoma County was created from parts of Marin County and Napa County. The county boundaries have since changed a few times, but the core area around Petaluma has remained constant. The name “Sonoma” comes from two different places: One is from Spanish meaning “mountainous range” and another is from French meaning “humble cabin or farmstead on a height.” The original Ohlone people who lived here were known as the Nisenah tribe. They are thought to have arrived here about 2,000 years ago and may have left behind any remains we still see today including petroglyphs found at high elevations in this area. In 1849, during California's Gold Rush period, some prospectors discovered gold near what is now Petaluma Springs. This led to an influx of settlers into this area and soon enough there were small villages dotting the landscape with Native American occupants living nearby as well as European miners looking for new veins of gold. In 1865, when Yosemite National Park was established it included much of what is now Sonoma County within its boundaries also including Petaluma Creek which lies within today's counted acreage of Yosemite National Park! Today you can find many reminders of how quickly things changed in this area with Pioneer Day being celebrated annually on October 16th - a day commemorating when these changes began! Anecdotally speaking it seems that many local businesses still manage to capitalize on all that history which makes Sonoma so special!
