After 1945 Sonoma continued to grow rapidly as an agricultural center with vineyards producing raisin wine, sparkling wine and hard white wines such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Sonoma has been designated a Global Hometown by UNESCO Creative Cities Network since 2001 because its economy depends on tourism; however today most people identify themselves primarily with their occupational fields: agriculture or health care services

Some buildings constructed during this time include: Adobe Walls (1852), Donnybrook Mines (1854), Wokingham Hall (1855) and Beaumont House (c 1850). Many small towns also formed throughout Sonoma County during this time such as Petaluma, Gilroy, Pleasanton and Santa Rosa before becoming incorporated into larger cities or counties such as San Francisco or Marin County during subsequent decades. Today there are still numerous small villages scattered throughout the county that retain their unique cultures and histories despite having few if any physical remnants from earlier times
Sonoma County was founded in 1851, when the Mission San Francisco de Asís (built in 1776) and Rancho Sonoma were combined to form a single new land grant. The county seat was then located at Petaluma. In 1875, Sonoma became part of California during the state's Admission Act.
