The first post office opened in 1868 in Petaluma and remained open until 1912 when it moved to Rohnert Park because of distance from larger communities and also because Petaluma had been attacked by bandits two years earlier (1870). The new post office was long known as "Pete's Post" because its first mayor was Pete Peterson (1872-1907). In 1908, voters passed a measure creating a board for local government which included seven members elected at large plus one member appointed by the governor; this body became known as the Board of Supervisors later that year. With rapid growth came problems such as overcrowding within some local authorities and increasing transportation costs needed to accommodate everyone involved with town development including agriculturalists, traders/commerce people etc.; this led eventually to more calls for state intervention culminating with passage of Proposition 13 (1978) which capped property values at $250 per square foot ($10 per square meter) throughout most ofSonoma County despite overwhelming public opposition thereto leading ultimatelyto economic decline throughout much ofthe ensuing decade associated with high interest rates & asset bubbles worldwide resultingin major job losses (& massive wealth gains) during& subsequentendoftheGreat Recession!
