When the push to find new land and resources in California led to the establishment of Missions in 1817, they were one of the first communities in what would later become Soledad County. The area now known asSoledad was part of Rancho San Luis Rey de Francia, which was granted to Manuel Nieto by Governor Padre Felipe de Neve. From this grant, Nieto received a portion of present-day San Luis Obispo County and some adjacent Mexican territory. One of the original missionaries at Rancho San Luis Rey de Francia was Father José Arguelles who founded Mission Santa Clara on November 3, 1797. At that time, Mission Santa Clara consisted of only a chapel and a small adobe ranch house. Father Arguelles soon realized that he needed more people to help him with his missions. He called out donations from local farmers and ranchers in order to build additional church buildings and associated functions such as barns, sheds, schools and other infrastructure necessary for the growth of his parishioners. This type of philanthropy is still common today among many Californian Catholics. The first school building constructed by Father Arguelles was located on what is now First Street in downtown Soledad (then known as Adobe Road). That schoolhouse served students from childhood through high school until it burned down in 1840 due to an arson fire set by elements within the Catholic Church! A second school building was built on Third Street between Old State Road (which would eventually be renamed University Boulevard) and First Street around 1834-35. That schoolhouse also served students from childhood through high school until it burned down again due to an arson fire set by elements within the Catholic Church! In 1868-69 a third school building was erected on Fourth Street between University Boulevard and Second Avenue which became known as Holy Cross High School after being dedicated by Bishop Don Farrell during Pope John XXIII's visitto Southern California! Holy Cross High School operated until 1972 when it merged into nearby Monterey Peninsula College! During this time period there were also several churches established including Our Lady Of Good Hope Parish which opened its doors for services on October 15th, 1867; St Ignatius Parish located at 5500 Winchester Ave.; Immaculate Conception Parish located at 2400 Topaz Dr.; Our Lady Of Ransom Parish located at 10600 Pismo Beach Rd., etc.. These churches were all built with financial assistance provided by individuals or families concerned about the spiritual well-being of their community members. One such example is St Ignatius Parish which received $5 per capita from donors throughout its lifetime! With so many different religious institutions established throughout Soledad County over these years, it can be difficult to ascertain just how scopes history has played role here - but we can thankful for those moments where scopes have been used effectively for Missions purposes or simply enjoyedfor nostalgic reasons!). Thanks also goes out to our current Archbishop who has made scopes education a priority within our Diocese - something we greatly appreciate!!

Soledad is a small town in central California. It is located on the San Joaquin River, about 20 miles west of Fresno and 40 miles east of Bakersfield. The population was 3,568 at the 2010 census. The Soledadita Mountains are located in the town. They are an important part of the local economy because they produce grapes for wine production and other products. According to the United States Census Bureau, Soledad has a total area of 5 square miles (12 km²), all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,826 people, 1,413 households, and 822 families residing in the town. The population density was 209 people per square mile (79/km²). There were 1,611 housing units at an average density of 90 per square mile (35/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2%of the population.

In 1907, Soledad became the first city in California to establish an electric utility company. The city also built a waterworks and achieved many other progressive goals during its early years. In 1970, Soledad disbanded its public library system and merged with nearby Menlo Park to form theSoledad-Menlo Park Library District.
