Soledad is a town located in Kern County, California, about an hour's drive north of Los Angeles. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. The name comes from Soledad creek which flows through the community. It was formally incorporated on November 6, 1912. The area now known as Soledad was first part of what is now Bakersfield. In 1836, José Saravia and his party of pioneers discovered significant gold deposits near present-day Soledad Creek. The site became a mining camp under the leadership of Juan Bautista Alvarado which during 1849ona new settlement called Rancho Adobe de las Palmas de los Olivos (adobe on the banks ofSoledad Creek). Mining operations started in earnest in 1850 and by 1860 over 1 million pounds (680 metric tons) were being mined from the solesidakite deposit at nearby Adobe City. For a time it seemed as though Californias rich gold field would remain undeveloped; but within five years all surface mines had been exhausted and production ceased entirely due to competition from other fields in Mexico and South America. In 1865 following a survey by Major John Sutter for promoter James Folsom who wanted to build an immense new line between Sacramento and Las Vegas this event led to increased mining activity along Soledad Creek with tannery, lead mine, smelter etc., begining up until World War I when they stopped because of heavy use of artillery fire across US border
