It is interesting to note that despite all the challenges faced during its early years, Soledad County has always managed to remain vibrant and active. Today, this county is home to a number of important cultural institutions including the University of Southern California and Desert Museum; both which are major tourist attractions across Southern California. The settlement, known as "Fort McDougall," was founded on the south bank of the Sacramento River. In 1871, Soledad County was created from parts of Contra Costa and Kern counties. In 1909, it attained full countyhood. The name "Soledad" is Spanish for "peace."
