In 1959, Soledad became an incorporated city when it merged with nearby Big Bear City.

Soledad is a small town in California, located on the edge of the Mojave Desert. The population was 1,864 at the 2010 census. It is part of Kern County. The history of Soledad begins with Spanish settlers who arrived in 1769 and named it "San Francisco del Oro" (the "golden Fort") after finding valuable gold mines there. In 1821, Mexican troops sacked San Francisco and burned down the fort; all but three of the original Spanish settlers were killed. The only remaining Spaniard, José María Salcedo, went into hiding in a nearby valley until he helped lead an attack against Mexico's forces at Tejon Pass in 1846 that led to their victory over Santa Clara County's Mexican defenders. In 1848, American prospectors discovered gold near Soledad and started mining there; by 1860, more than one million dollars had been recovered from these mines. Goldmining operations were abandoned during the 1870s drought because of dwindling supplies of water and ore; however, some new silver mines were established in Soledad during this time. In 1907, Soledad became part of California when it was admitted as a state; it has since experienced rapid growth due to its location within easy commuting distance of Los Angeles and other major metropolitan areas. Heavy industry has declined since then but agriculture remains the dominant sector: many families operate farms or ranches which provide both income and employment opportunities for locals. Today, Soledad features several shopping centers including one called "City Market", incorporated in 1978 as an outdoor mall with five anchors including Macy's/JCPenney/, Sears/Kmart/, Jamba Juice/, and Fry's Electronics/. A second shopping center - Suncoast Mall - opened in 2007 adjacent to City Market; it contains 11 anchor stores including Sears/Kmart/, Jamba Juice/, Nordstrom Rack/Saks Fifth Avenue/, TJ Maxx/, Michaels Music Center*, Calvin Klein*%. *Not open for business

In 1846, Spanish settlers arrived in California and named the area Soledad after a local mountain. The first people to live in what is now Soledad were the Costanos. In 1848, the Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded on this land and began converting Native Americans into Christianity. In 1851, Governor Manuel Nieto announced that the Californios would be given their own state and this proclamation led to a furious debate within Spain about who would control California's new territory. Mexico contended that it rightfully belonged to them as part of their Mexican Empire; while England saw California as a valuable possession they wanted to keep under English control. On July 9, 1850, Mexico formalized its claim by signing an agreement with United States President James K. Polk which ceded California to America without giving any consideration to Spain or Mexico. This event marked the end of Spanish rule over what is now northern California and started what has been called the American Civil War (1861-1865). The costano population rapidly increased in response to colonization and rapid growth in agriculture throughout Alta California became known as the Gold Rush era. By 1858, there were more than one thousand costanos living in Soledad alone. Many of these early colonists had connections to Central Valley trader Juan Bautista Aguirre who helped organize importation of goods from China during this time period for use throughout North America including items like soy sauce and tea because no other country offered these products at that price point at that time. From 1861 until 1865, many battles were fought around Soledad between American forces and Mexicans trying to regain control over what was once their patrimony: Battle of Churubusco on July 29th 1861 resulted in 4 Ulysses S Grant’s dead along with 50 Mexican soldiers; later known as “the great gazelle battle” due both to its tactics employed by General Winfield Scott (USA) & Colonel Obregon (Mexico), but also due largely due strategic misdirection by Commodore John Doolittle USN whose squadron mistakenly attacked Mexican positions while flying over Churubusco Reservoir while USS Sacramento was anchored off shore; [1] Battle of Vallejo on October 8th 1865 resulted in several Ulysses S Grant’s dead along with up to 1,500 Mexican soldiers killed or wounded including Colón badged general Andrés Pico y Gómez who had surrendered his army unconditionally two days earlier at Rancho Palo Alto near present day Gilroy; [2] all three engagements resulted ultimately in American victory which demonstrated how successfully Mexico could not militarily resist an invading force despite large numerical inferiority numerically speaking when compared against advancing American forces augmented by experienced military commanders such as General Winfield Scott

Soledad is a small community located in the Mojave Desert of California. It was founded in 1892 by Anna Post and her husband, John D. Post. The Post family ran a general store and post office until 1915. In 1929, Soledad became an incorporated town with its own government.
