Alice had come to Southern California as executive secretary for Governor Goodwin “Butch” O’Malley of Texas during World War I and later worked as an associate editor at Harper’s Bazaar magazine before becoming headibrarian of Pitzer College (now Claremont McKenna College). Alfred had become director of mines at Western Electric Company in Pittsburgh before coming to UCLA where he met AliceKroeber on a business trip to Pasadena. They married on November 17, 1907, at Stonington Abbey Church near Pasadena. Alfred served as vice president for research at Western Electric Company from 1923 until his retirement in 1957; he also authored several books on electrical engineering including "Wireless Transmission Technology" (1927), "Theoretical Physics: A Treatise on Elementary Quantum Mechanics" (1929), "Principles of Radio Engineering" (1939), "The Electrical Properties Of Matter" (1948) and "Electricity: Science And Technology" (1959). He was also chairman emeritus of Hughes Electronics Co., Inc.; majority owner since 1967 of ABC TV network parent company Westinghouse Broadcasting Corporation

He named his town after Saint Augustine, one of his favorite saints because he felt that its location resembled thatched roofs near Santiago de Compostela in Spain where Augustine had spent time helping pilgrims flee persecution back then. This hope that good would follow arrived when local farmers produced crops successfully year-round and businesses flourished despite occasional floods caused by melting snowpack winter months nearby. Nieto also believed that public education should be available to all residents so they could develop their skills and knowledge for later self-reliance and economic success; this philosophy would continue to be important to Soledad over time as the town grew prosperous while enjoying statewide attention for its fine architecture and civic amenities like libraries, parks, hospitals and schools (including one now managed by UC Davis).
