Soledad is a small town in the Mono County of California, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east bank of the Colorado River, about 20 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. Soledad's economy is based upon agriculture and ranching. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Mono County were Spanish missionaries in 1769. They founded Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and Mission San Fernando Rey de la Laguna on land that was donated by Mexico to Spain as part of the 1821 Mexican–American War Treaty. The mission buildings still stand today; they are used as a museum and schoolhouse. In 1847, Soledad became part of Alta California under Mexican rule following America's victory over Mexico at Adobe Walls during the Mexican-American War. Spanish settlers arrived here beginning in 1848 when Carpenters & Masons from New York City sent troops under Colonel José Joaquin Murillo to survey Rancho Panoche which included present-day Soledad Canyon. On February 22, 1849, Congress passed an act granting federal lands east of Bakersfield to California as part of Compromise Of 1850 which provided for statehood for USA and did not include Alta California (present day Sonora). This Act placed all pretense of self-government within US hands so local Californios quickly proclaimed themselves independent republics known collectively as "Los Pinos" or "The Topos". The first president to be elected from this territory was Francisco Juana Hoyt with 54% against 27% winner Antonio López de Santa Anna who had been appointed governor by Governor Carlos Ortiz y Bejarano just before the Compromise Act took effect on March 4th . This act also created new territorial boundaries including portions now within Mono County and Riverside County while giving up parts of Fresno Valley including Rodeo Hill whereupon Don Manuel Nieto erected his home shortly thereafter In April 1850 he sold his ranch southwest along Tioga Creek adjacent to city limits for $10 per acre In November 1850 Justices James A Wickersham and George C Potter heard a case filed by José Joaquin Murillo challenging provisions in Deeds Of Patent For Rancho Panoche offered by Englishman Edward Haggerty who had purchased it from Juan Rodríguez Chávez on December 10th , 1849 . After careful consideration Wickersham ruled that there could be no title “to” or title “over” any particular parcel because such titles would vest withlhe next occupant or owner thereof after long years throout which time he might have become extinct or deserted it Who then should receive title if title vested with someone who never set foot therein? So much for Haggerty’s patent! The decision provoked strong opposition both inside and outside Los Angeles county but without success was finally upheld by an appellate court later that year (Curtis v Wickersham) public opinion began moving away from Anglo domination even before incorporation into incorporated city Limits

By 1860, there were over 100 businesses in town. In 1865, the Soledad Railroad was founded and quickly became one of the most important transportation arteries in town. The population grew rapidly during this time and by 1870, there were over 1,000 residents living in town. The early years of the 20th century were difficult for Soledad because it was sandwiched between two major gold fields: Nevada and California. However, through hard work and perseverance, Soledad slowly began to improve its economy and become known as a thriving community that contributed greatly to both Nevada County and California.
