In 1881, Soledad was founded by George W. Hargrave and James T. Sands as a small community of about sixty people. The town grew rapidly because of its natural resources, including coal, oil shale, and uranium. In 1911, the town had a population of about two hundred people and it boasted three churches and five schools. The first firearms regulation in California took place in 1907 when the state legislature passed the "Gun Control Act". This act established regulations on the ownership and use of firearms in California. Soledad, California is a small town located in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 3,923 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Modesto-Napa Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Soledad were Father Francisco Xavier Rodríguez and Father Anselmo López on March 10, 1769. They explored the area which included present-day Soledad and named it "Isla de la Cruz". The Spanish mission at Rancho Santa Anita was established in 1826 by José Joaquín Carrillo and Manuel Nieto. In 1846, Mexico gained independence from Spain and renamed Isla de la Cruz as Soledad after General Antonio Peña Nieto's wife, Soledad Armijo y Duhalde. In 1863, American Pacific Railway built a line from Stockton to Bakersfield that passed through present-day Soledad. The town became an important railroad stop with many businesses opened along the line including a flour mill and grocery store. In the early 1920s, most of the mills closed down due to competition from larger cities such as Sacramento and Berkeley. However, one business stayed open until 1984: Geary's Discount Store which still operates today on Main Street inSoledad under the name Geary's Grains & More
