Soledad, California is a small town located in Inyo County, California. It was founded in 1869 by workers on the Rancho Susiana Mexican land grant. The name of the town comes from Spanish Soledad, meaning "peaceful place." The population of Soledad was 2,362 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Soledad was John Wesley Powell who explored and mapped the Great Basin region during his 1879-80 trip through Inyo and Mono Counties. A post office called "Solerado" was established in 1881, and remained in operation until 1912. The name change came about because of a conflict over whether to call an area north of Los Angeles "Solerado" or "Los Angeles". In 1911, Don Alfredo Rivera bought some land adjacent to what is now Soledad from Waddell Calloway for $2,500. Rivera built a ranch house there which he named La Casa Blanca (The White House). He served as mayor of Soledad from 1915 to 1923 and 1924 to 1928. Don Alfredo Rivera also donated land near present day Interstate 8 south of town for a high school and college campus that would become USC Trojans football coach Norm Chow's alma mater; Chow currently resides on that property with his family. There are numerous Rivera-owned businesses still operating today including Don Alfredo's agricultural store which still sells produce from its original location behind the old bank building downtown; two local newspapers - one morning paper and one afternoon paper - have been published continuously since 1903 despite moving several times throughout their history; three bridges were built across Mono Creek - one by Don Alfredo himself (now crossed by Interstate 8);Soledad High School remains one of America's only public high schools open all year round despite being closed during many years due to lack of funding; and much more...
