According to the United States Census Bureau, Soledad has a total area of 2 square miles (5 km²), all land. The history of Soledad began on December 1, 1849 when two Mormon pioneers named John and Emma Smith traveled from Nauvoo, Illinois to find new land for their people. They arrived at what is now known as Polebridge Road in modern-day Soledad after spending many weeks traveling through central California's valleys looking for a place they could settle down and start anew. On December 15 they made their first settler's log home at polebridgeroadsettlement which still stands today near the intersection of Polebridge Road and Highway 66 north of town. From this initial outpost beginnings until around 1870 there were only 10 residents living in Soledad; however over time more people started moving into the community because it became available with good farming soil and good transportation connections to outside markets like Fresno, Bakersfield and Chico. Some early businesses that thrived in Soledad include J & E Grocery Co., Mrs Marsh’s Bakery & Cafe, Old Paint Store #2 & #3 along with numerous other small businesses that dotted not only Main Street but also surrounding streets throughout the town during its early years. These days much of what once constituted DowntownSoledad today are either abandoned or used as parking lot or roadway entrances for local schools buildings- an ironic reminder that even though most original businesses closed within a few decades due to changing demographics out grew infrastructure limitations confronted by newer arrivals like rapid growth during World War II combined with increased demand from industry newcomers such as housing development following World War II). "In 1851 pioneer James Waddell built his own cabin on a rise overlooking Main Street."

However, since 2000 new development has begun to boost the town's economy once again.
