On January 17, 1846, Mexican nationals led by José Joaquín Cortés founded the town of Soledad in what is now Los Angeles County. The town was named for Maria de la Concepción Soledad, who had accompanied General Antonio López de Santa Anna as part of his return from Mexico City after the Mexican Revolution. In 1847, a group of Americans arrived in California and founded the city of Angels with land that still forms part of downtown LA today. The first post office at Angeleno Heights was established on December 12, 1847. In 1850, Captain Pedro Menéndez Post explored and claimed much of present-day LA for the United States. The discovery of oil in southern California led to rapid growth in Los Angeles County and its associated cities and towns. The first public school opened in Soledad on October 3rd, 1852 under instruction from Mrs. James Fenton Hahnauer (the daughter of an American settler). A second school was erected a few years later but burned down in 1861; it reopened under new ownership and name on December 10th. A local physician named Drs Jameson and John Staley started providing medical care to residents in 1860-61 when they opened their own clinic on Spring Street just east of Main Street which became known as "The Staley Clinic." Drs Hahnauer financed two more schools: one for girls (1863) and one for boys (1867). One addition to this campus were two gymnasiums (now used as parking lots), three blocks east along Main Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue South; these buildings served as both homes for students until 1927 when they were replaced by new multi-purpose buildings at Third Avenue/Broadway/Alameda Streets near Chavez Ravine Park. Three other institutions were also started during this period: one called "latitudinarian" or northern Californian because it taught subjects including history, literature, botany etc., attended by people from all over the state; another modeled after eastern European Collegiate Schools Modeling University which offered four years' collegiate level coursework within a Swedish community setting; finally there was "UCLA" or Univeristy Of California School Of Law which graduated its first class only in 1915! All these institutions remain important parts of UCLA's heritage today - see below!
