The town of Soledad was founded in 1833 by Captain John Smith, who named it for his sister, Mary. It was first a small community located on the banks of the San Joaquin River. In 1848, Soledad became part of the new California statehood and its first governor, John Brougham, appointed local resident George Hearn as justice of the peace. Hearn's successors were also residents of Soledad until 1861 when they relocated to Placer County. The death of Mayor Edward Sanger led to a series of municipal referendums in which citizens chose between annexation into Sacramento or incorporation into Placer County. Annexation was approved by voters and Soledad became part of Sacramento on July 1, 1873. A cotton gin and mill were built in 1880 by James Waddell at what is now eastbound I-5 near Westlake Boulevard; this helped make Soledad an important regional center for cotton production during the late 19th century. During World War II many factories were built around town including one for Boeing Military Aircraft production that produced military jets until 1962 when it closed down due to competition from Lockheed Martin Aviation company HQ in Bethesda Maryland
