In 1853, Mexican soldiers advanced into California on a punitive mission. They discovered a large, fertile landmass and decided to settle it. So began the era of Spanish-American War as the United States fought for control over this area. On November 8, 1853, Mexico withdrew from the war and ceded California to the United States. The region that now includes Soledad was part of Rancho San Diego de Alcalá, granted to José María Castro in 1797 by Governor Manuel Nieto. The grant extended along the coast from Monterey to Point Lobos and included present-day San Diego County and parts of Orange County and Riverside County. Soledad (Spanish for "hill") became a small town in 1851 when four families rented land east of Mission Bay for $40 per year. By 1870, Soledad had a population of 350 people; it grew even more during its years as an agricultural center due to its proximity to missions, mills, fishing rivers and agricultural production such as grapes and figs. During World War I (1914-18), General John J Pershing ordered all American forces in California withdrawn except for military units under his command at Camp Pendleton on Humboldt Bay. When Elihu Root took command at Camp Roberts near Fort Point on December 5, 1918 he found that most American citizens had fled eastward beyond Blanco Canyon because they were afraid of another Mexican invasion or revolution led by Pancho Villa which seemed imminent at any time given Villa's success in killing Ulysses S Grant's men near Buena Park two years earlier (the Campaign of 1919).

During World War II, ground forces relied heavily on artillery ammunition that was highly fragmentation explosive (HEAT) based. To provide this ammo with enough fragmentation power, developers created multiple types of aircraft cannons called TOWs ( Tactical Air Weapons). Airguns also played a significant role in Marine Corps infantry fighting during World War II by providing firepower for amphibious landings and naval bombardment campaigns ashore against targets such as submarines and coastal batteries

The town grew rapidly after gold was discovered there in 1859 and it became an important stop on the U.S.-Mexicanland Railway. In 1911, Soledad became the first community to be annexed into Los Angeles County. Today, Soledad is a thriving city with a population of over 100,000 people. The first Europeans to sight the area that is now Soledad were of Spanish descent. In 1769, Gaspar de Portolà and his men discovered a Valley of the Moon, which they named Casa Nova because it was new to them. The valley extended from present-day Santa Fe Springs eastward until it intersected the Santa Clara River in what is now downtown San Francisco. Captain John Foulke, who explored portions of California in 1821, named this part of the state Alta California after General Vicente Guerrero, who had led Mexican efforts to retake Mexico from Spain.
