Solana Beach is a town on the Pacific coast of California, United States. The population was 24,651 at the 2010 census. Situated on Solana Beach Cove on the Pacific Coast Highway, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in California. The town's name comes from Spanish meaning " sunshine." Solana Beach has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two centuries and was first known as "Comstock" after Samuel Comstock, an early settler. In 1853, postmaster General Franklin K. Lane ordered all American towns in California to adopt a new name that would become Oxford-Stroudsburg in honor of English statesman and explorer John Oxenford Stroud. When Solana Beach did not receive a new name from Lane within three months, he offered her the land where she now stands for $1 per acre (which at that time was about $4 per square mile). That same year entrepreneur Nathaniel Wolkowitz founded what is now known as Wolkowitz's Insurance Company which became one of America's largest insurance companies. In 1875, Solana started serving as its own incorporated city when it annexed Santa Monica and other surrounding townships with no vote required by either body. On July 1, 1923 Solana Beaches officially became part of County line Angeles when Los Angeles County was created from parts of San Bernardino and Orange counties following the November 1922 general election. As part of annexation efforts by LASA to combine more diverse county lands into one single area there were protests and boycotts against annexation by many residents who felt they had already been given everything they needed before their incorporation date including water rights which were eventually granted to neighboring Newport Harbor Village along with other benefits such as tax breaks and free street parking privileges which continue to this day while Solana Beach retains alluvial beach access rights through State Coastal Program rules passed in 1978 pursuant to then state law governing ocean tidal flats
