The first scopes arrived in Solana Beach in 1887. The town was founded by a man named John Eckhardt and his wife, Mary, on the edge of Solano County. They were looking for a place to grow grapes because they could not find any land to produce them in their home county. Eckhardt and his wife developed a business importing telescopes from Europe. In 1901, the Eckertts bought an old military arsenal and turned it into the Eckert Observatory. It was the first observatory in California and the only one west of San Francisco until 1966 when Caltech moved there from Pasadena. In 1916, Dr. Julius Jaffe built an 8-inch refractor telescope at our observatory which became known as "Jaffe's Giant." In 1925, our observatory changed its name to "Solana Beach Observatory" after president Franklin D. Roosevelt visited us during World War II. Today we continue to offer astronomy education programs for both children and adults through our telescopes and related exhibits at our facility as well as providing public programming throughout Southern California every summer!

The city of Solana Beach was founded on December 12, 1911 by beach merchants and developers. The name "Solana" came from a Yaqui word meaning "Island in the Sea." The original town site lay at the mouth of the San Rey River. The first post office opened in 1912. By 1916, Solana had developed into a small community with a population of about 30 people. In 1928, the City Council enacted an ordinance that called for the creation of a public works authority to build roads and sidewalks, improve water supplies, and erect other civic amenities for the benefit of Solana Beach residents and visitors. On October 1, 1930, Solana Beach became an incorporated municipality with its own government. In 1951, annexation by Hermosa Beach made Solana Beach an unincorporated municipality again. A number of businesses were built along Howland Avenue during this time including The Department Store (1930-1948), Jockey Club (1948-1951), Oriental Land Company (1950-1959), American Legion Post No. 444 (1959-1966), United States Rubber Corporation (1966-1978) and Continental Tire Corporation (1978-1981). On May 3, 1981, when Orange County was created from portions of Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County, Solana Beaches became part of OC's newly formed region known as Southern California
