The town was founded by American soldiers in 1909 as a base for military activity in the region. In 1926, Solana became an incorporated town, and over the years has developed into a small but vibrant community with a rich history. The town was originally named after Spanish sailor Manuela de Salinas y Saenz, who arrived on shore during a naval expedition led by Commodore John D. Stockton in 1827. The name “Salinas” is derived from the Atacama Desert where de Salinas had been stranded on his trip around South America. The first settler in Solana Beach was Mrs. Anna Janssen, who moved to the area from Easton, Pennsylvania in 1911. By 1922, Solana had reached its current size with approximately 1,500 residents. In 1926, Solana Beach became an incorporated town thanks to passage of municipal law No. 562 by then-Mayor William Haddon Doherty Sr.. This law allowed towns to be created within certain boundaries if they met certain requirements including population density (At least 500 people per square mile), school enrollment (at least 10 pupils per grade level), fire protection and other public services deemed necessary for their well-being. According to Town Manager Donny Morse at the time: “This ordinance provided that we should have our own police force and our own fire department so that we could maintain order and provide civic amenities like libraries and parks…. It also authorized us to make all decisions concerning our schools which are now our municipally-owned properties…” read more
The town of Solana Beach, California was founded on December 5, 1875 by the brothers George and Benjamin Shields. The town was named after Spanish Admiral Isidro de la Salle who had died in 1836. The first post office was opened in 1876. In 1916, Solana Beach became part of the City of San Diego.
