The coming of railroad transportation allowed farmers to sell their products directly to consumers rather than going through intermediaries such as merchants or delivery men. This also created new opportunities for businesses such as cattle drives and stores that sprang up around town centers like Thousand Oaks and Beaumont Canyon. The growth of these businesses led to increased prostitution and other social problems which were eventually solved by local officials with prosecutions and education campaigns. By 1920, most residents within Simi Valley had either moved away or died off leaving behind a largely rural population which continued to rely heavily on agriculture for economic stability until after World War II when increasing mechanization led to a decline in employment opportunities among many farmersfolk who lost their jobs during the Great Depression
