The Simi Valley area was first populated by the Chumash people, who were known to live in and around the present-day city of Ventura. In 1847, a group of Mormons from Nauvoo, Illinois started a farm near present-day Lompoc. The Latter Day Saints arrived in California in 1848, and began their settlement here. From 1850 to 1860, many Mormon families moved into what is now Simi Valley from the nearby San Fernando Valley. By 1870, the population of Ventura had grown to about 507 people. At that time, there were no roads or schools in the valley; settlers relied on Indian trails for transportation and communication. In 1892, Ventura County was created from portions of Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County. The county seat initially was located in Ventura but later moved to Lompoc. The population growth in Ventura meant that more land became available for farming and development. Roads were built throughout the county during this time period; today’s arterial streets date back to this era. In 1916, when World War I began, Ventura enlisted in the military as part of Camp Roberts (later Camp Pendleton). Many citizens volunteered their services and worked on munitions plants during wartime; they are also credited with helping make Lompoc an important industrial center during this time period. After hostilities ended in 1918, most residents returned home but some continued to work at munitions plants until well after World War II had ended. During post-war years (1947 through 1957), many new jobs opened up for citizens as businesses relocated to new locations or changed hands multiple times within the valley due tothe inflationary trend at that time. This change helped stimulate economic activity throughout southern California which led eventually to increased housing prices both within Simi Valley itself as well as elsewhere within Southern California during this period
