Simi Valley is a small town on the west side of Ventura County, California. The population was 17,711 at the 2010 census. The name originated from Indian word Simi meaning "Valley". The valley has been inhabited by successive waves of Native Americans for over 100 years. The first European to visit the area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. He named the area San Pedro andclaimed that it lay between himself and Alta California. In 1821, George Custer passed through Simi Valley on his way to fight with Santa Anna in Mexican territory east of Los Angeles. A year later, Ulysses S Grant's army invaded California and discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in this valley on November 20, 1846. On February 14, 1850, Californians voted to create an independent state called Nevada out of parts of what are now Ventura and Kern counties. This event is known as the Gold Rush because so much gold was found here during that time period including at Sutter's Mill which yielded $5 million in total gold value during its three years of operation! In 1861, following the American Civil War, Simi Valley became part of Los Angeles County when it was split off from Orange County. The original town site still stands today within city limits but is no longer used as a residential or commercial center due to its growth into other areas within LA County such as Carson City (now Carson) and South Pasadena (now Silver Lake). It wasn’t until 1970 when a new shopping mall was built adjacent to Interstate 5 just outside city limits in neighboring Lynwood which quickly became one of Southern California’s largest malls housing more than 1125 stores including Macy’s Department Store and Sears! The Simi Valley region of California is located in the middle of the state. It surrounds Ventura County and is bordered by Kern County on the north, Los Angeles County on the east, Orange County on the south and San Bernardino County on the west. The valley has been inhabited for at least 10,000 years and was first settled in what is now Ventura County by man. The area that is now Simi Valley was part of Humboldt Bay which extended from present-day Northern California to central Mexico. In 1853, when land grants were made to various Californians who had participated in a Mexican–American War victory over General Antonio López de Santa Anna, some of these grantees set out from Simi Valley with their families to find new homesteads. These early settlers were forced to leave their properties after they were taken over by Native Americans who built villages near where they lived. In 1871, Don José Maria de la Peña founded Rancho Simi Adobe in present day Simi Valley as part of his Rancho Santa Margarita grant given to him by Spanish Governor Manuel Micheltorena. This ranch became one of the most important landholdings in southern California because it included valuable Palo Verde oak forests and other resources that allowed its owners to sell goods far beyond their own village or ranch limits. By 1870, about 60% of all acres withinSimi Valley were owned by Anglo American farmers while 20% remainedownedby Native American groups. During World War II several hundred Japanese Americans were interned at Camp Shiloh near Beverly Hills during 1942-1945; many died from disease or exposure there before being sent home via transport trains headed through Central America back into Japan proper. After Japan's surrender, numerous U.S.-born Japanese people living abroad (such as those born in Japan before 1923) also experienced post-war economic hardships due to a combination of factors includingrice price deflation caused by war shortages and social changes brought about by World War II; postwar restrictions placed upon citizens' ability to repatriate financial assets (such as property); limited job opportunities available outside military service; and a general feeling among many young people that they had done nothing wrong but suffer during wartime while their parents had heroically served our country
