Grant ordered Major General Charles Ewell to march through Simi Valley on his way to visit other military installations. At night Ewell's column reached the Santa Clara River near present-day Loma Linda University; while they were crossing a bridge over the river a group of Indians attempted to ambush them and successful killed nine officers and men before being driven back by artillery fire from point blank range.
