The Simi Valley area was first settled by the Chumash people in the 1800s. In 1849, a group of Mormons from Salt Lake City arrived in what is now Simi Valley and began to make initial land purchases. The first white person to settle in the area was John Wesley Powell, who explored the valley in 1869. The early pioneers were mostly men, and most of their families arrived later in the decade. By 1890, there were over 100 residents living in what is now Simi Valley.
