In 1795, the area now known as Simi Valley was part of Spanish Rancho San Pablo de la Cañada. In 1821, it became part of Mexican State of Alta California. On November 16, 1850, the US state of California acquired parts of Alta California from Mexico when it was Don Manuel Nieto's cession in a treaty known as The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The area that would become Simi Valley was named after José Gomez Simi who ranched there in 1827 and 1828.
