In 1876, when Rancho San Vicente was sold to Thomas Edison, he decided to move east from Los Angeles so he could find new land for his electric company. He purchased some of the same land that later became Simi Valley from Manuel Nieto y Costilla. Edison built his experimental plant nearpresent day Simi Valley Boulevard onbaugh up until 1886 when he moved it about 10 miles north along Oxnard Road to build an even larger plant which remains standing today known as Live Oak Avenue Plantation; now part of Cal State Fullerton . The initial storeowners were: A&P (later JCPenney), Grocery Outlet Co., Ford dealership/ hardware store/ gas station/, Newsom Café (), Pacific Gas & Electric (). Other early businesses associated with this period include bakery Mrs Atwater (), dry goods grocer Bangs Bros., post office (), Blacksmith Shop () soon followed (). By 1916 there were over 20 businesses operating in Simi Valley with a payroll totaling $2 million ($ Today: less than $10 million)!. About 1920 most prominent business owners deceased or retired including Ayer Men’s Store co-founder Elisha Gray () father of American architect Ezra Gray (); Llewellyn Junkers Sporting Goods founder Lewellyn Junkers (); Edsel Ford’s father James Ford (); local paper magnate Hiram Johnson (); movie producer Darryl Zanuck (). Many residents took advantage of valley wide telephone service which began operations on October 15th 1922 with Bell Telephone Laboratories leased lines only starting at $1 per month! It wasn't until 1941 that television started airing out here from studios located just south of present day Canyon Country Drive where various sets were erected such as KTLA 9TV broadcasting from Studio 3E at Universal Studios Hollywood beginning February 6th 1951 thru 1984 and finally KABC 7TV starting November 5th 1951 thru May 31st 1981 before moving back into studio 3G during channel change processMarch 25th 1957 thru December 12th 1984 ) Until recently much maintenance has been performed inside our city limits by our very own City Services Department consisting of Special Events Director Emeritus Ronny Feldman through contract with mutual aid agencies providing emergency services paramedic response helicopter ambulance airlift fire truck police department etc without ever having any outside contractors working within our city limits!
