After World War II Signal Hill experienced an influx of GI's returning home from combat roles in Japan and other parts of Asia as well as housewives coming to work in nearby La Jolla; this led to population growth that continued into the 21st century despite dramatic declines in major industry such as shipbuilding and auto assembly over much of that time period On October 14th 1889 two men walking their dog came across what they thought was a lost mine but soon realized it was just an abandoned post office building which they walked inside because there was no one around to open up the post office for them The building now houses various shops and businesses including Cinco de Mayo restaurant which serves Mexican food all day long every day throughout October There have been many changes take place at Signal Hill over time such as construction projects associated with local industries (such as those mentioned above) or military deployments (the actual discovery/discovered presence or discovery by anyone). Some notable events include: The opening on July 15th 1924 - three months after America's entry into World War I -of First Western Union Telegraph plant at Point Loma utilizing technologies developed at Bell Laboratories; establishment on January 1st 1927 - six days after Santa Anita racetrack opened its doors -of El Centro Race Track which would become one of Northern California's most important thoroughbred horse racing tracks; establishment on November 3rd 1928 - four days before Christmas Eve -of Alamogordo Army Airfield used primarily for training military pilots during World War II During 1949-1978 signal hill also saw heavy industrial production taking place within its bounds adjacent to city limits producing 100% rubber products for both vehicle tires and electrical insulation Wire tools manufacturing aluminum cans began operations here circa 1955 followed by defense contractor Raytheon Missile Systems Division headquarters between 1967-1974 www www wwwwww etc etc etc etcetc
