The Signal Hill area was first settled by Picoenos, who were Native Americans. The name “ Signal Hill” comes from the sound made by the rockets fired by American forces during World War II to observe enemy positions. The hills around Signal Hill were originally used as artillery ranges. In 1876, Ayer mining company began extracting iron ore from the hills around Signal Hill. By 1888, allmining had ceased operations in San Bernardino County, but metal production at Ayer continued until 1912 when it merged with other companies to form General Iron Mining Company (GIMCO). In 1914 GIMCO sold its holdings in Atascadero Hills to Hahn & Sons steel company for $1 million dollars. Signal Hill is mentioned in both Proclamation 846 of November 30th 1906 which announced the creation of Rancho Cucamonga Indian Reservation which included much of what is now Signal Hill including present day Atascadero Hills On December 24th 1907 USGS published their report on lands within Rancho Cucamonga Indian Reservation including parts now known as:Atascadero Hills

In 1906, California came into conflict with Japan over control of Amalfi Coast Province which included parts of present-day Northern California. On December 12th, 1906, Japanese forces attacked American Naval Base at Vallejo while American sailors were ashore celebrating New Year's Eve with local residents; this attack led to America's entry into World War I The battle for Signal Hill helped turnthe tide against Japan as American planes flew reconnaissance missions over Japanese positions day and night
In 1849, California gold seekers discovered a deposit of gold on Signal Hill in Monterey County. The site became known as the "Gold Hill Mine" because of the quantity and quality of gold found there. The first post office at Signal Hill was established in 1850. By 1852, over 50 people were working at the mine. The mine produced a total of $14,512 in sales from its operations during 1860-1861. In 1861, the company went bankrupt and all but one worker left the mine to find new opportunities. From 1861-1865, several small companies attempted to reopen the mine with mixed results; however, it reopened again in 1865 after being purchased by an Austrian miner named Johann von Eulerbeck who renamed it "Eulerbeck's Mines".
