Signal Hill is a small, unincorporated community in Kern County, California. It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin River, about 5 miles south of Livermore. Signal Hill was founded in 1887 by John Earle and his brother-in-law George A. Marshall. The first post office at Signal Hill was established on December 12, 1888. The town was named for a hill in nearby Livermore that had been the site of a signal station used to relay messages between Livermore and Sacramento. The first school in Signal Hill opened in 1889 as an oblong building with six rooms. In 1897, the town built its own sawmill to provide employment for local residents. By 1915, Signal Hill had two churches and one sawmill; it also had a hotel, bakery and candy store. In 1919, the mill closed down due to heavy competition from other mills in the area. However, the town kept its own Post Office until 1933 when it amalgamated into Livermore proper. In 1936, Signal Hill became home to California's first nuclear reactor; it was operated by Westinghouse Electric Company until 1957 when it went offline due to safety concerns over radioactivity caused by plutonium production at nearby Los Alamos National Laboratory. In 1984/85, Signal Hill joined forces with neighboring Sunnyvale to form the largest "community development corporation" (CDC) in Northern California history - Working Together We Can Do Better (WTDB). WTDB continues to promote community involvement through volunteerism and education opportunities throughout Kern County while working towards environmental justice goals including renewable energy development within the local community
