In 1892, Signal Hill was the site of a gunnery training range that served as a model for future military ranges. The range's superintendent, Colonel Augustus Winchester, developed an improved trigger system that would be adopted by the United States Navy and eventually become the standard trigger design for firearms in the world. In 1896, Winchester donated land to Signal Hill for use as a military post. The installation became known as "Signal Hill Station" and soon became home to U.S. Military Academy cadets and their instructors. Signaling unit commanders from across America used the range during maneuvers and drills to practice signals vocabulary and signal drill procedures. In 1924, Signal Hill had its final change when it became home to then-UCLA campus police officers after they were transferred from Westwood Police Department headquarters on nearby Exposition Boulevard. From then until 1965, Signal Hill was also the location of UCLA's Pistol Range where students could learn how to shoot pistols safely under adult supervision. Today, Signal Hill is still used by USMC recruits and faculty at USMA for firearm safety training purposes as well as occasional public events such as picnics or Fourth of July fireworks displays. The Post Office building adjacent to the school has been preserved as a historical landmark since 1959 and currently houses operations relating to UCLA's Campus Recreation Department (CAD).

Signal Hill is a small unincorporated community located in Monterey County, California. It is located on the east side of Signal Hill Road, approximately six miles east of Monterey and two miles south of Interstate 15. The name "Signal Hill" was given to the hill by General Antonio Lopez de Mendoza who used it as a lookout for Indian attacks in 1769. The town started to develop around the 1820s when pioneers began moving into the area and built homes and mills. The first post office was established in 1827. By 1830, Signal Hill had a school, churches, and businesses. In 1848, General James Krieger arrived in Monterey County with his army and founded what would become Santa Cruz County. He assigned Signal Hill to him as his headquarters. Krieger named the town after General George Armstrong Custer who had been killed at Battle of Little Big Horn five years earlier. In the early 1800s, there were few roads in this area so travelers traveled by horseback or wagon over rough terrain covered with sagebrush and cactus. When railroads came through this region in the late 1800s, Signal Hill became an important stop on their tracks because it was close to both San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles City limits. Many of today's residents were born or raised here including Governor Jerry Brown and Congressman Ted Lieu among others during their formative years. Today, Signal Hill remains a sleepy little community that retains its historical significance despite its lack of population growth over recent decades due to suburbanization withinMonterey County combined with other economic forces such as tourism development throughout Northern California which has revived many small towns across Western California like SignalHill .

In the 1860s, Signal Hill was a small rural community in Alameda County, California. The hills on which it sits were used for agriculture and cattle ranching until the early 20th century. In 1909, an electric line was built between Oakland and San Francisco and Signal Hill became one of the first communities to receive electricity. By 1922, the population had increased to over 1,000 people and Signal Hill Post Office opened in 1923. The post office closed in 1951 due to lack of business. The town's only store closed in 1959 as well. In 1962, when BART began serving Oakland with its new subway system, Signal Hill became part of BART's South Bay area station and continued to serve as a commercial center until 1990 when all stations were closed down except for South Bay Station which is still open as a museum today. signal hill cemetery has since been converted into an urban park
