In 1924-1925, signal hill achieved fame when four American soldiers who had been captured during World War I were held captive here until their release by General Douglas MacArthur's forces following their return home from Europe" During World War II (1939-1945), Signal Hill played an important role as a training ground for United States Army Air Forces pilots flying missions over Japan during World War II . In 1945, after Japan's surrender, most of Japanese military activity within California ceased; however some remains continued into 1946 including those at SignalHill whereupon signals were discontinued "This finally ended any remaining claims of ownership by Japan". After World War II ended SignalingHill experienced a period of economic turmoil due to changes brought about by technology advancements such as television and satellite phone service becoming available throughout much of America ." SignalHill bounced back quickly due to renewed interest from developers and entrepreneurs who saw this opportunity to exploit what they believe was valuable undeveloped land around town." Today SignalHill offers more than just tourism with its rich history; it has also become a center for agriculture and hospitality with many businesses specializing in these industries."
The Signal Hill neighborhood on the eastern side of San Francisco was home to the first hospitals in California, and also served as a point of reference for early settlers. The area now includes several blocks of houses built around 1847 by early Californio pioneers, including José Romero and his wife María de Jesús Neri. In 1851, Don Miguel De la Madrid granted a deed to Juan Pablo Monterey for 1/2 mile (0.8 km) east of today's intersection of Montgomery and Sacramento Streets, which became the site of the current Don Miguel De la Madrid School. The school was built in 1861-1862 on land donated by Don Miguel de la Madrid, who had purchased it from José Romero ceded to him by Mexico during its occupation of California. On February 14th 1860, Governor John Prentice ordered all mustered out of military service in California except those forces under Lieutenant General Manuel Nieto that were quartered at Folsom Barracks until called into duty elsewhere; this order exempted Signal Hill residents from military service. In 1865-1866 there was an active campaign led by Aimee Semple against polygamy among American Mormons living in Utah; Semple's campaign resulted in the first successful prosecution of a Mormon polygamy case in U.S. history In 1868–69 San Francisco earthquake caused extensive damage with fatalities and injuries; many homes were destroyed or damaged beyond repair During World War II many employees at Bechtel Corporation worked at their headquarters located atop Signal Hill
