The first gun sights were installed on the Signal Hill graveyard in 1851. The remains of Captain John Cook and his crew, who died in a shipwreck off California's coast in 1821, are interred there. Captain Cook's " Discovery" was lost near Point Conception on October 20th, 1840. A lighthouse was built at Signal Hill to commemorate the wreck and the crew of " Discovery". In 1861, Colonel John C. Fremont placed a gift from America at the head of Adams Street for use as a military post by the Militia company that had been raised there.

Signal Hill is located in San Bernardino County, California. The town was founded by Captain James A. Garfield on October 14, 1876. The first post office was established in 1877 and the first school was built in 1881. The population of Signal Hill grew steadily until it reached its peak in 1925 when it had a population of over 1,200 people. However, the population decreased rapidly during the 1930s as World War II began and the war contributed to a significant decrease in the number of residents in Signal Hill. Today, there are only a few remaining residents of Signal Hill and most of the buildings have been replaced by new homes or businesses.

The townsite was first settled in 1879 by San Francisco Bay Area farmers and their families who bought land north of the tracks near present-day Interstate 5 and US 101. In 1925 Signal Hill had a population of 1,200; in 1940 it had only 350 residents. However during World War II Signal Hill became an important military base for the United StatesAAF because it housed more than 10% of America's fighter aircraft production workforce. With the end of World War II Signal Hill experienced rapid growth with few changes until after 1986 when both local government and business interests began to dominate over residential development which has continued to this day despite challenges from upcoming annexation by other towns nearby. Signal Hill is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Claremont–Salinas–Monrovia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Signal Hill was founded in 1887 by Enoch Pratt and his father to provide a stop on the Santa Ana Railroad for miners travelling between San Bernardino and Mono Lake. In 1907, the town became an incorporated municipality with its own government and school board. The town's name comes from two signal hills that dominate the community: Signal Hill (one of which is now within Signal Hill City limits) and Battle Mountain (part of Redlands). The first post office at Signal Hill opened on November 15, 1887. The name change came about because of a dispute over whether Battle Mountain or Signal Hill should be considered the "hill" where mail was received. In 1907, when Battle Mountain was acquired by Signal Hill, it became one of several towns located within its boundaries; Battle Mountain would remain an independent municipality until it merged into Claremont in 1959. In 1912, while still a township, Signal Hill authorized development of what would become known as "The Hills." This began with construction of a small frame house on present day Highland Avenue near junction Road 8 and continued with development of other homes through 1914-16. By 1922 all but one home had been built; during this time there were no schools or services available aside from streetlights and curbside phone service. A local doctor did not have enough patients to maintain his practice so he offered free care to residents living in "The Hills." By 1926 only 9 homes remained unoccupied due to conversion into apartments or other uses after World War II brought increased demand for housing close to downtown Claremont (). After decades of being largely abandoned, many residents decided to fight for their community back in the early 2000s when they formed Claremont Neighborhood Association (), later renamed Claremont Community Development Corporation (). The Signal Hill area in California was settled by the Ohlone Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first European to visit the area was Father Francisco Xavier Sepúlveda, who sighted a mountain peak on July 4, 1769, and named it "Alta California". He founded Mission San José de Guadalupe on the summit of Signal Hill after his trip. In 1821, Mexican President Agustín de Iturbide gave land in what is now Alta California to José Joaquín Moraga for his Rancho Santa Anita. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, General Manuel Micheltorena ordered an attack against General John C. Fremont's forces at Bear Valley near modern-day Sonoma County. As Fremont's troops approached Claremont Village they were met with gunfire from militia led by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla who had orders to drive them out. A group of Ohlone Indians under Chief Tenaya fought off the invaders and drove them back towards Monterey Bay. Aftermath of this battle included over 200 dead Spanish soldiers and Mexico lost control over much of northern California as part of United StatesMexico disputes over Alta California. However, American development continued apace while Mexican efforts stalled until 1850 when American Lt Col George Armstrong Custer reached Bakersfield from upriver and discovered gold there; he started mining operations which quickly developed into a thriving trade center with goods flowing all over North America including China via steamship connections because of abundant supplies of salt water lodes in that region sourced from underground reservoirs near present-day Salinas.
