Signal Hill is a small town in Sonoma County, California, located on the eastern edge of Paso Robles. As of the 2010 census, the population was 15,636. The name comes from "salt hill", meaning a high point near the town's center where salt was sold to settlers for use in cooking and other purposes. Signal Hill started as a small community of about 100 people in 1887 and soon became a major local trade center with its own railroad depot and stores. The town began to grow rapidly during World War II as Palm Springs moved into the area and many workers from nearby San Diego came to work at various factories in Sonoma County. The post-World War II years were difficult for Signal Hill with an overall loss of jobs and population growth that has kept it relatively unchanged since then. Today, Signal Hill is known for its annual Gun show which takes place throughout the summer months at the civic center.

Signal Hill is a small town in Kern County, California, located on the southern slope of Mount Wilson, at an elevation of 4,491 feet (1,372 m). The ZIP code for Signal Hill is 93707. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,898. It is part of the Bakersfield–Delaware Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Signal Hill comes from two items in nearby Rancho San Miguel: "Siglo" and "Hill". The first refers to a Spanish mission built in 1769; and the second to a high hill near by that served as a lookout for rancho owners who had land overlooking Hollister Creek waterfalls. When gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1848, people started coming to Signal Hill to look for it. A post office was established at Signal Hill in 1851 and remained in operation until 1920. A railroad depot was built at Signal Hill in 1865 and became known as Station Square. In 1868 a new school opened at Signal Hill which stood until 1916 when it burned down. During World War II there were several military airfields here including Imperial Air Force Base #2 (later known as Edwards Air Force Base), which operated from 1944-1945 and 1945-1946; Naval Air Station Catalina Island (NAVAIR CAT), which operated from 1942-1944; and Navy Range 3 (later renamed McChrystal AFB) which operated from 1945-1950s. After World War II various industries moved into or grew around Signal Hill such as Cement Manufacturers' Association building on current day US 101 Business Street between 1912-1967; Ford Motor Company plant on present day US 50/Highway 99 south east of town began production starting with Dearborn Vans models during 1943; Monsanto Co.'s pesticide manufacturing facility on present day Highways 95 & 99 north west of town began production during 1951; ABC TV station KTVU began operations here beginning with their first broadcast on December 2nd 1948 using powerlines brought over from Los Angeles Harbor area
In 1868, the first post office was established on Signal Hill. The town of Signal Hill was founded in 1871 by a group of pioneers who were looking for a location to build a settlement near the then-new San Francisco and Sacramento Railroad. As the population of Signal Hill grew, so did its need for space, and in 1892, the city of Sacramento moved into what is now part of Signal Hill. By 1907, however, Signal Hill had become an agricultural community with few residents. In 1933, when California became an American state, it added Seal Beach as one of its townships. In 1940, when California adopted the U.S. Constitution as a new state, Seal Beach became part of Hawthorne County; and in 1961 it became an independent city within Hawthorne County.
