Signal Hill is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Victorville metropolitan area and is on the eastern edge of Inland Empire. The first inhabitants of Signal Hill were Native Americans who lived near what is now downtown Victorville before moving to this location in the early 1800s. The town was founded by David Woolsey in 1887 as a result of his land purchase from George Custer's widow. In 1959 when General Electric purchased GEICO from American Telephone & Telegraph (AT&T), Signal Hill became one of several towns within GEICO's newly created wire services area which would be responsible for providing phone service to customers throughout its territory including Los Angeles County and most of Riverside County including Hesperia and Riverside City limits. In 1978 GEICO merged with Time Warner Cable effective January 1st after over fifty years as two separate companies. Signal Hill is a small, rural community located in San Bernardino County, California. It was first settled in 1853 by farmers who built their homes near the Indian Wells River. The area that today includes Signal Hill was part of Rancho Cucamonga and later, Rancho San Bernardino. In 1876, the United States Post Office was established at Signal Hill, and mail service continued until 1920. The town's first store opened in 1886. The community developed around agricultural land used for grazing and farming activities. By the early 20th century, Signal Hill had a population of about 150 people. Some of the main businesses in the town were a grocery store (1912), a post office (1920), an auto dealership (1925), and a bank (1929). However, during World War II many residents fled to nearby Palm Springs because of thebombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 1948, Signal Hill incorporated as a city under state law. The city grew rapidly due to its position as an important transportation center for southeastern San Bernardino County and its role as the primary supplier of goods to Palm Springs from various agricultural production areas. In 1980, Signal Hill became one of twelve communities consolidated into what is now Riverside County with status as an unincorporated area within that county. As part of this consolidation process, much of Signal Hill's historic infrastructure—including its schools and post office—was lost or destroyed during development over time. However, most aspects of Signalehill's history have been preserved through community-owned museums affiliated with both the city and Riverside County government agencies such as the Sheriff's Department Museum and Signalehill Historical Society Museum which are open year-round except Christmas Day].
