In 1933, Mayor Charles Ebel hired H&H Manufacturing Company to produce artillery shells for the military. From then on until 1951, H&H Manufacturing Company was responsible for making all types of firearms including gun barrels. Gun barrels are still produced by H&H Manufacturing Company today and are used throughout California Bay Area cities like San Francisco and Oakland

The population of Signal Hill increased rapidly from its early years until World War II caused a decline in population because so many people were drawn away to serve in war-time hostilities across the Pacific Ocean. However, due to growing industry and new housing developments nearby during postwar boom times, Signal Hill has regained some of its lost populations over time; however, it still remains a relatively small community overall compared with other cities or towns within San Francisco metropolitan area

The Signal Hill area in California was once a part of the Spanish missions and after the mission system disbanded, the land was divided among its former mission owners. The most famous of these were Rancho San Francisco, founded by Franciscan friars in 1769, which later became part of what is now San Francisco. The other ranchos were Missions Santa Clara and Monterey. In 1821, Mexican president AgustÃn de Iturbide transferred ownership of Alta California to Mexico following the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This left Signal Hill as an unincorporated territory within California. In 1848, when American settlers began arriving in California, they discovered a large oil well near present-day Signal Hill and soon started exploring it for resources. By 1850, Oil Creek had been named for this well. In 1853, a group of pioneer Americans organized at nearby Sutter's Fort to establish themselves as a town called Fillmore on some abandoned Rancho San Pablo land east of present-day Fillmore Street. The town was named for General William Tecumseh Sherman who halted Ulysses S Grant's army at Reeds Ferry on March 9th during his march across America's Plains to enter Mexico City through Chihuahua State on February 14th (4 months after Walker's Expedition). fills in many gaps in our understanding about early history here
