After World War II ended (1946-48), many businesses closed or were moved to other towns within Kern County due to technological advances such as television and airport developments that began occurring during that time period. In recent years there has been renewed interest in Signal Hill with developers proposing various plans for revitalization including new housing estates along with restoration of some older buildings as well as new development on one side of town while preserving much older architecture on the other side which offers views of downtown Bakersfield

Signal Hill is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, located on the slopes of Signal Mountain. The name may be derived from the ringing sound of a bell that was used to summon people for religious services in the early 1800s. The community was founded in 1887 by Methodist missionaries. By 1912, it had a population of 100 and was named after General Hiram Maxim, who helped develop ammunition manufacturing in Southern California during the 19th century. In 1922, Signal Hill became part of San Bernardino city and has been governed by its City Council since then. It is home to two high schools: Saddleback Valley High School and San Bernardino Valley College-Guildford Campus. The first post office at Signal Hill opened on November 1, 1887 under the name East Signal Station (later renamed West Signal Hill). The original owners were Mrs. Hallett Emmons and her husband Drayson Emmons; they operated it until 1888 when it passed through ownership changes hands six more times before it finally came into the hands of Alfred Waddell in 1912 which made it an operating station for Western Electric Telephone Company (later Bell system).
